‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ is the fourth book in the Harry Potter series; there are seven books total. This book features the main characters from the first three novels, and it also introduces many new and prominent characters. Many people consider this book the turning point of the Harry Potter series, as it depicts a life-altering event for the wizard world. The following details summarize some of the main plot points, describe the new characters, and more. Read on to find out what ‘Goblet of Fire’ has in store for you.

The first chapter of this book is set fifty years prior to present day. It describes how the Riddle family (Voldemort’s family) was murdered under mysterious circumstances. It also depicts the death of an elderly man who is the groundskeeper that lives in a cottage near the old, abandoned Riddle House. He is murdered when he enters the house and hears Lord Voldemort and his servant, Wormtail, plotting the death of the infamous Harry Potter. After this scene is described, it immediately transitions to Potter waking up. He is in a great deal of pain because of the scar on his forehead given to him by Lord Voldemort.

One prominent event in this book is the Quidditch World Cup tournament. This is an infamous tournament in the wizard world, and Harry attends it with the Weasley family, Hermione Granger, and numerous other Wizards. After the tournament ends and the wizards are camping, havoc is unleashed by Death Eaters that were not punished during Voldemort’s downfall. The Death Eaters torture Muggles (non-wizards) and send the Dark Mark (Voldemort’s calling card) into the air. This causes a great deal of panic and terror, as the wizard wold is shown that Voldemort may be making a return.

This book also features the Triwizard Tournament, which is an infamous tournament held among the three wizard schools. The tournament is only designed for older students, but Harry’s name is mysteriously entered for submission into the Goblet of Fire. He is chosen to take place in the tournament, despite the fact that he did not enter and has no desire to compete. The binding rules of the tournament do not allow him to drop out. This causes a major rift between Harry and Ron Weasley because Ron is very envious of Harry’s chance at winning the tournament.

Throughout the rest of the book, Harry competes in the Triwizard Tournament with some successes and some failures. Following one of the tasks, a major character of the novel is murdered. During the last task in the tournament, a student is murdered by Voldemort in front of Harry Potter. It is revealed that the tournament was set up to lead to the murder of Harry by Voldemort. However, Harry escapes and takes the student’s dead body with him. A handful of other surprises occur, but overall the end of the book focuses on the fact that Voldemort is alive and rising to power again.

The third book in the Harry Potter series opens on the night of July 30th with Harry receiving birthday gifts from all of his friends and learning that there is a criminal on the loose from Azkaban. The following morning Harry learns that his aunt will be staying with the family and she makes him angry enough to accidentally inflate her like a balloon leading to him running away from home and taking a magical bus to Diagon Alley.

Harry sees a large black dog and decides to rent a room in pub until school starts rather than going back to his family. He manages to finish all of his holiday homework and strolls the alleys of the shopping district longing for a new brook and running into Ron and Hermione. Hermione makes a choice for her familiar and Ron objects because it doesn’t get along with his familiar.

Harry overhears the Weasleys talking about how the escaped prisoner may be coming after him and realizes that his life may be in danger. He also finds that the man betrayed his parents and led to their death.

Angered by this news Harry boards the train and meets a new professor who saves them from a happiness sucking monster. These creatures have been put on the train to keep the escaped prison from coming after Harry but also have a chilling effect on anyone that they come near.

Upon arriving at school Harry finds that classes are much harder, and that Malfoy wants to get Hagrid fired from the school. Harry spends his village weekends with the professors as he isn’t allowed to attend without permission. Finally he breaks his beloved broomstick making this year seem like the worst yet.

Just when Harry thinks all is lost a new broomstick arrives in secret and Harry is given a way to attend Hogsmeade visits by the elder Weasley children. He overhears more about the death of his parents and their friend and begins to feel even more afraid. Harry then learns a very powerful charm to protect himself from the monsters that were on the train and Hermione begins to unravel the secret behind Professor Lupin’s behavior.

At one point Ron loses his rat and is led on a chase by the rat to a hole in the ground. At this hole he is dragged away by a large black dog and the other members of the trio follow. They are also followed by two professors and find that the dog is actually Sirius Black the escaped convict. It is revealed that Ron’s rat is that actual betrayer and that Mr. Black escaped to help and save Harry.

Finally the group must escape from a werewolf and find themselves racing backwards in time to save two lives. Harry has finally discovered a family that is willing to fight for him and the school year ends on a positive note. Harry returns to the home of his relatives in high spirits feeling ready to take on the next year.

The Beginning Of The Book

This book starts out with the protagonist of the story, Harry Potter, at his adoptive family’s house. The Dursleys are Harry’s only remaining family since his mom and dad where killed by Voldemort when he was a baby. Harry is forced to spend his summers there because of this.

While his Aunt and Uncle Dursley are hosting a dinner party, an elf named Dobby shows up. He is quick to warn Harry of Danger if he decides to return to Hogwarts. This is the magic school of wizards Harry attends with his friends. Harry refuses to head Dobbys warning. As a result, the house-elf makes a mess in the Kitchen. This upsets the Dursleys so they lock Harry in the Cupboard they force him to sleep in all summer.

Later, Harry’s friend rescues him with a flying car. This is when the reader is reintroduced to Ron Weasley, Harry’s best friend from the first novel. After he is rescued, he stays with the Weasleys. They go shopping for school supplies. While shopping, he has an encounter with the new defense against the dark arts teacher, Mr. Lockhart.

Harry’s Trouble Getting To Hogwarts

Harry cannot get through the train platform as he tries to return to Hogwarts. Because of this, Ron and Harry have to take the flying car which they flew horribly. The ended up crashing the car into the Whomping Willow, and are then detained.

In The Middle

During the night of Halloween, the caretaker’s cat is petrified. A threatening message is written over it. Harry hears a strange voice while this is going on. He, Ron and Hermione do some research on the strange events that occurred. They then discover that Hogwarts has a chamber of secrets and that that last time it was opened, fifty years ago, a student was killed.

Harry Comes Under Suspicion

Harry Terrifies his fellow students by speaking in parseltongue while trying to charm a snake. Only the air of Slytherin should be able to do this. Hermione and a girl from Ravenclaw are petrified later in the book. Hagrid and Dumbledore are blamed and removed from the school.

Ginny Weasley

A teacher discloses to Harry that Ginny Weasley, Ron’s younger sister, has been taken to the chamber of secrets. Harry goes into the chamber to meet Tom Riddle, the air of Slytherin. Tom Riddle turns out to be a young lord Voldemort. Tom then summons a Basilisk to destroy Harry. Harry destroys the snake with the sword of Griffendor, brought to him by Dumbledore’s Phoenix. He then stabs Tom Riddles Diary, which destroys him.

Harry is able to help Ginny. He then explains his adventure to Dumbledore. Harry is also able to free Dobby by forcing his master to present him with clothing. Everything is back to normal at Hogwarts, so Harry leaves.

Listen Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone Audiobook

We first meet Harry at his aunt and uncles home on Privet Drive. He is a young babe being dropped off by a man with a strange device and a woman with a strange affinity for cats. We don’t see him again for 11 years when he begins to get letters addressed to him that terrify his guardians and anger them into running away from their very hope. However, they are pursued by a giant who tells Harry that is a wizard who is also the son of wizarding heroes who sacrificed their lives to save him.

This sets in motion Harry heading off to an amazing boarding school that is only open to witches and wizards. He discovers hidden shopping districts, train platforms, and even whole villages in many places within the UK. His first two months see him slowly making friends with a Mr. Ron Weasley and learning more about the school as whole. Then on Halloween the school is attacked by a troll and a Ms. Hermione Granger becomes a fast friend to the others.

This group known as the golden trio becomes an unstoppable group of friends who are sure there is something strange going on at their already strange school. Through all of this Harry makes his way onto a sports team, gets in a fight with someone from another house, finds that he dislikes many of his classes, and finds the wondrous appeal of magic.

Harry also begins to learn more about his origins and finds a mysterious mirror that shows him his family together. He finds himself addicted to this mirror and is heartbroken when the headmaster has it moved to another location. Around this time he begins to notice one of the teachers acting strange and comes across a huge three headed dog seemingly guarding something. Whispers around the school begin to gain his interest and together with the other three members of the Trio he becomes convinced it is up to him to save the school. Together the group circumvent a series of trials only to find that they were leading the forces of evil to a very important artifact. Only through quick thinking are they able to defeat the threat and escape with their lives and a few points lost. The teacher who they thought was guilty is proven to be innocent while one that they barely noticed has been harboring the soul of pure evil within him.

The school year ends with their first victory and the promise of many more to follow. The friends head back to the train to go home and resolve to spend more time together in the following years. Everything seems to be looking up for Harry as he heads home to his terrified guardians with a newfound knowledge of the magical world. The book leaves off in a place that instills happiness and a sense of hope within the reader as portions of the next book begin to be hinted towards.
